Alpine Terrace

This unique house has a front facade that favors 1930’s Arts & Crafts styling while the back side of the house captures a 1930’s modern aesthetic with large, rhythmic plate glass windows and a curved bay window showcasing stunning views to the east. Every inch mattered in the redesign of this compact, hillside house. We looked for ways to rework spaces and incorporate custom built-ins to maximize storage and efficiency.

The original primary bedroom on the main floor connected through the dining room and lacked adequate closet space. We relocated the bedroom entry to a more private location which allowed for larger closets and an improved primary bathroom. Removing the wall that blocked the dining room from kitchen, we connected the cooking and eating, and capitalized on the view. Shifting the stairs created space for a reading nook with bookshelves carved into the knee walls at the upstairs landing. This became a quiet hang-out space with a view for the kids’ bedrooms on the upper level. In the basement, the new stair configuration allowed for new and improved laundry room and a cozy family room with a fireplace and wet bar. Subtle changes throughout created huge improvements in flow and livability.
